Our Society Has The Same Symptoms As The Roman Empire Just Before The Fall: Is A Collapse Inevitable?

Are you worried about the society you live in today? Well, maybe you should be.

“When you live in a false society that bases its wealth upon, then that society will collapse eventually. Not because I say so, because it’s not based on physical reference”

                                                        – Jacque Fresco

The writing has been on the wall for quite a while now. Ignoring it any longer would only spell disaster for us. If you think that the notion of our society falling apart like the Roman Empire is borderline paranoid, think again.

Let’s Go For a Reality Check

In a manner similar to the erstwhile Roman Empire, the boundary between politics and entertainment has dissolved. In all the chaos that now encompasses what we term life, there is that sense of foreboding -The society as we know is declining and soon headed for a fall.

“London Bridge is falling down, My fair lady”

The things that we share in common with the empire are overwhelmingly similar. Morals out of a bacchanalia? Check. Abuse of public office for private purposes? Check. Bread (welfare) and circuses (reality TV) for the masses? Check. Oh the times, oh the customs! Where is Cicero when we need him?

Here’s what a study funded by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and headed by the National Science Foundation’s Safa Motesharrei had to say about our society’s fate:

“Two important features seem to appear across societies that have collapsed,” reads the study. “The stretching of resources due to the strain placed on the ecological carrying capacity and the economic stratification of society into Elites and Masses.” In unequal societies, researchers said, Collapse is difficult to avoid…. Elites grow and consume too much, resulting in a famine among Commoners that eventually causes the collapse of society.” As limited resources plague the working class, the wealthy, insulated from the problem, “continue consuming unequally” and exacerbate the issue, the study said. For those who think modern society is immune from the problems that brought down ancient civilizations, a “brief overview of collapses demonstrates not only the ubiquity of the phenomenon, but also the extent to which advanced, complex and powerful societies are susceptible to collapse,” the study said.

There is also a cultural aspect to the way the modern society is similar to that of Rome’s. Just like Rome, the modern society is in a state of transmigration and translation. The internet has revolutionized the way we communicate and therefore that has led to a change in our lifestyle. This change is in no way less than the influence the Greeks rendered upon the Roman civilization.

Having said that, there is no way we can reverse or stop these cultural influences from occurring. In fact, the liberal approach of debate has essentially become our greatest foe as we are unable to take decisions due to ongoing debates. However, we do need to learn from our past and subsequently make up our future. It is only through sustainable development and increased equality that we can proceed towards a more harmonious future. La dolce vita anyone?
