Full Moon In Capricorn July 8-9, 2017

This full moon is called the Buck Moon by the Algonquins of North America as it coincides with new antler growth on young male deer. It is also sometimes called the Thunder Moon as it brings summertime storms. The moon will rise at sunset, peak at midnight and set at sunrise.

The Sun and Moon in total opposition between Cancer and Capricorn: Shakti and Shiva, divine feminine and masculine; what we feel vs. what we think we should feel. Too much Capricorn makes us rigid, too much Cancer makes us worry.

The Cancer cycle is a journey to our innermost home. On this watery quest, nearly to the core, the full moon in Capricorn rises, and a deafening vibration builds. Though in many ways the full moon during the Cancer (lunar) cycle represents Luna’s ultimate peak for the year, the moon is actually in her “detriment” in Capricorn, as this is the sign opposite the sign she rules, which is Cancer. When a planet is in the sign of its detriment, the planet is weak and strained. In other words, you may feel moody, unusually tired or especially sensitive.

Cancer feels like home, and her mantra is “I feel.” Those born under this constellation move slowly and cautiously, just like crabs, because they are very susceptible. The psychic membrane separating Cancer from the external world is thin and porous. This sensitivity makes Cancer uncommonly understanding, empathic and sincere. Cancer can play it cool in the heat of the moment, but at the first opportunity, she has to let it all out, whatever she’s feeling.

In Cancer’s world, the heart is our primary, organic source of information, and she keeps it well protected. Cancer is deeply internal and categorically personal. Capricorn, on the other hand, holds himself to the highest of uncompromising standards. Loony Cancer, delightfully irrational, follows her heart all over the cosmos, but Capricorn, so bound up in his ideas of what should be, rarely experiences real freedom. Though Cancer may cling fiercely to cloying comforts, she dutifully reminds us not to live only by what appears to be; Capricorn, likewise, teaches us the joy of rudimentary self-discipline.

This axis seeks relationships/environments which promise longevity and security. Both Cancer and Capricorn want to put down roots and get settled early in life, physically or emotionally. Together they gravitate toward center. Both the crab and the sea goat love to cuddle, sleep, relax and eat yummy snacks. It is no small deal when they devote themselves to another. A stable partner is (usually) a priority element in what it means to feel settled. Since full moons act as a culminating force, this indicates a decision point is coming in a relationship or, more generally, something regarding the integration of feminine and masculine energies, within or without. If you are experiencing conflict or doubts about your partner or have been struggling to find your voice, I can’t promise smooth resolution. Conflict notwithstanding, this phase promises seismic lovingkindness, even if it doesn’t happen immediately.

This full moon will be one degree away from Pluto, a nearly exact conjunction. Though Pluto is obviously not visible to the naked eye, you can imagine him looming 7.5 billion kilometers beyond the earth, directly behind the full moon. Any conjunction with Pluto is explosive, so be very kind and mindful, my friends. The moon will also be opposite Mars, another very masculine planet with his own fiery agenda. Emotional volatility is a serious possibility. Minimize social contact and go be outside!
