How “Positive Affirmations” May Not Be So Positive

Using Positive Affirmations properly is a really amazing life transforming tool. The concept of repeating positive and good language can help focus on what you want rather than what you don’t want, which in turn affects the results in your life to getting what you want!

However if used incorrectly, they can cause more damage. Studies have shown that when you do repeat a statement over and over again, you will start to believe it and in turn developing old negative beliefs into new ones. But when it comes to affirming something about your life on a daily basis that you may really internally not believe, it can cause worse damage.

Examples:

If you are waking up and you are really not looking forward to the day and so something you really don’t feel motivated for. If you say:

“I am so confident to do this today” but you feel > I’m so scared to do this today I am not ready at all and I don’t feel good.
“I am so excited for today” but you feel > I hate this job I want to quit.
“I am loved” but you feel > I feel so empty and lonely.
“I’m so happy” > I’m so upset about this situation I really don’t know what to do with it.”

Why It’s Dangerous

After years of using positive affirmations myself and studying of how our words and language can affect our lives, it wasn’t until recently when undergoing NLP Practitioner Training that I realized my Positive Affirmations were not motivating me at all and were actually causing me conflicting doubt. Making a statement over an underlying issue can cause more damage and anxiety.

IF you are already confident and believe you are, to use a statement like “I’m confident today!” and you feel so good and believe it when you say it, this is an amazing boost. But if you really don’t feel confident, to say that can cause even more doubt.

This is how to actually create affirming statements

To create powerful affirmations that empower you to feel good and move you forward, the first step is to use affirmations in MOTION.

5 Powerful Examples

“I am in the process of becoming the best version of myself.”
“Today I will do my best, but I will not stress over things I can’t control.”
“I am moving towards more love and expressing more love.”
“I am developing my strength and ability to accomplish all my goals and dreams.”
“I am moving towards accepting myself more and more and becoming more confident.”

Using affirmations in motions and verbs to describe that you are moving towards creates nothing but empowerment and hope!

Step by Step to Creating Your Own

  1. Write down what you want to happen, whether you want more confidence, your dream career, to know your purpose.
  2. Write them in active motion “Each day I am discovering more and more about myself and what career path I want, I am becoming so much more excited for each day.”
  3. Say them to yourself every day, looking in the mirror and spending a couple of minutes writing them down.
